Erin Williams of Washington Post blog Click Track has an interview with legendary group Earth, Wind & Fire and Janelle Monae received a mention.

What new artists pique your interests?

[Verdine White]: We’ve been talking about Janelle Monae - love Janelle Monae!

[Ralph Johnson]: We were talking about the Grammys, talking about new artists and of course Janelle came up. But then, Esperanza Spalding won a Grammy for Best New Artist.

AllHipHop.com has an interview with Dawn Richard. They discuss her background, "Making the Band," how she and Kalenna work with Diddy in Dirty Money and more.

AllHipHop.com: Now you’re part of Diddy-Dirty Money with Kalenna Harper and Sean Combs. Does Diddy dominate his artists and their music like people say?

Dawn: Well you know, I don’t think he ever had any women in a group with him. I can’t think of anyone at the label who had that opportunity, so it’s an interesting dynamic to see both sides of it – as his artist and being in his group. He is a man who has that reputation, but I think that anyone who owns a label and is an artist can tend to have that reputation.

The reality is they have to make sure that they’re pushing their product, because it’s their product. But I think what Puff did this time – I think he even surprised himself with this – he got two women who are extremely opinionated and really have a strong passion in what they do. So it’s kind of an interesting group because he has to humble himself sometimes, and he doesn’t like it. [laughter] But when it comes to passion and the things that we say, when we have a good opinion, he respects it, and he’s like, ‘damn, I had to humble myself.’ He hates to say that! [laughter]

But I think he’s starting to appreciate the fact that he is good at finding talent, and he has to believe in the talent that he picks. So Kalenna and I sort of force the hand at making him appreciate a powerful woman, which is hard for him. I think when he had his girls, it changed his whole perspective anyway. I’m the type of person where I ‘m not gonna bow down, you know? I make sure I give him my opinions respectfully, and I understand that it’s his project and his label. He understands that this is what I love to do, and that I’m an asset to this thing. I think that’s why Dirty Money has been successful so far.

Earlier this month, Billboard named it's 1,000th different #1 single on The Billboard Hot 100, the chart that lists the top singles in the country, regardless of genre. In a break down of labels posted on the Billboard website, Bad Boy was tied for 38th place for the most number ones held by any one label.

Tied for 38th may not seem high, but when you consider that this list goes back to the 1950s and how many labels that have released music since then, it actually is quite impressive.

You can easily view Bad Boy's Hot 100 history on our Hot 100 History page. Here are the five #1's:

Can't Nobody Hold Me Down by Diddy featuring Mase (1997)
I'll Be Missing You by Diddy featuring Faith Evans and 112 (1997)
Mo Money Mo Problems by The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Diddy and Mase (1997)
Hypnotize by The Notorious B.I.G. (1997)
Shake Ya Tailfeather by Nelly, Diddy and Murphy Lee (2004)

Cassie announced on Twitter that she would be featured in the new ck one ad campaign, shot by Steven Meisel.

Kevin Carrigan, global creative director of Calvin Klein Jeans and ck Calvin Klein, talked about the campaign with Vogue.

"We put them all in a room, just a big mirrored box surrounded by cameras, and let them try the collection," Carrigan told us. "The ck one collection is not about wearing clothes the way you've been told, it's about making them your own. We put the pieces in there in all sizes, from XXXL to XS; it's not about the perfect size - it's a play on proportion and androgyny. Girls were wearing jeans that were baggy and far too big, or wearing oversized shirts as dresses, they made the collection their own. It's the personalisation of fashion - and the campaign is really just a reportage of them trying the clothes."

CocoPerez.com has a quick video preview that Cassie calls "just a taste." The campaign will officially kick off on March 1.

CBS Los Angeles has a story about a newly revealed court record pertaining to testimonial made by an inmate who shared a cell with former LAPD officer Rafael Perez.

The inmate alleges that Perez, and another former LAPD officer, David Mack, were associated with Death Row and that Perez passed along the location of Christopher Wallace (The Notorious B.I.G.) to Mack at least one point during the event.

“Perez was working security. Perez had a cell phone. Perez said he called over to Mack, David Mack on his cell phone. Perez told Mack that Biggie Smalls was in his truck. Perez never said that he set up Biggie Smalls but I have heard that he…had something to do with that murder,” according to the inmate.

Perez was on-duty on the night that Wallace was killed and both he and Mack have denied their involvement.

Diddy has donated $100,000 to The 100 Urban Entrepreneurs Foundation, according to a press release. During GRAMMY week, the group was joined by Bryan-Michael Cox and SESAC in honoring Diddy.

From the release:

Annually, Bryan-Michael Cox recognizes a leading business executive’s commitment to music, business and service. The brunch was well attended by a mix of music and corporate executives, friends and family. Bryan opened the brunch with heartfelt words about the impact that “Puff”, as he referred to him during his speech, had on him. "When you’re around Puff, you just want to be better," Cox told guests. "Puff challenged me early on by asking, Son, do you know how hot you really are? I walked away wanting to make even greater music.” Bryan credited Combs as a mentor that offered him an opportunity to be greater. Sean “Diddy” Combs continued the message of mentorship and opportunity with his acceptance speech and accredited his success to being given an opportunity by mentors like Quincy Jones, LA Reid and Andre Harrell. Bryan-Michael Cox recognized the founders of 100 Urban Entrepreneurs, Magnus Greaves, Lucas Riggins and Dan Carriere and illustrated to the audience the value and impact of the organization. “Minorities are fundamentally at a disadvantage because many lack the access to financial resources and mentoring opportunities to start sustainable businesses.”

In a special presentation honoring Combs, Damone Franklin and Charlie Fyffe owners of Charlies Brownies, a 100 Urban Entrepreneur funded business, announced the establishment of the “Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs” Entrepreneurial Fund. Moved by the founders’ commitment to urban entrepreneurship and the stories of those currently served by the foundation, Sean “Diddy” Combs personally committed $100,000.00 to The 100 Urban Entrepreneurs Foundation. The donation will be used to fund 10 startup businesses and provide entry into the 100 Urban Entrepreneur Mentor Program.

Complex spoke with DJ Premier, asking him to recount the stories behind his "classic records." Included in this is The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Unbelievable" and "Kick in the Door." Interesting stuff to start the "Unbelievable" write-up:

“I almost didn’t make the record. Big called me at the last minute, and said, ’Get me a track,’ and I told him, ’I don’t have time to make one.’ I had other deadlines to meet at the time. He was on his way to blow up, and I loved him, and I wanted to help, but I really just didn’t have the time. I used to see Big in the area all the time. Just to hang. Mister Cee put me on to Big, and we would go down to the store where we used to buy 40s. We’ll see Big, and he’ll be like, ’Yo, what do I got to do to get put on?’ And I said, ’Well, you messing with Puff.’ And he’s like, ’Yeah, but he’s taking too long.’ And I would be like, ’Nah, stay with him. He’s going to help you get rich.’ He was just impatient like all artists, but it’s a process.

North America contributed most to the growth of vodka, with continued strong momentum in Cîroc and the launch of RÖKK vodka in the premium segment. Smirnoff net sales declined in its largest markets of the US and UK but grew high double digits in the emerging markets, reflecting the strategy of positioning standard products to emerging middle class consumers. ...

Cîroc: Cîroc continued its momentum in the US significantly growing volume and net sales, as well as gaining share in the ultra premium vodka segment. The new Coconut and Red Berry flavours drove overall brand growth and comprised over 50% of total brand volume.

The Coconut and Red Berry flavors were introduced in November of 2009 and now account for more than 50% of overall brand volume. Ciroc volume grew by 128% altogether.

In an interview with Speakeasy, a blog of The Wall Street Journal, Method Man was asked if he'd seen the "Notorious" biopic (he hadn't - "I don't like death at all," he said) and he also shared this story:

What was [The Notorious B.I.G.] like in real life?

He was hilarious, man. Once when we went inside this airport [in North Carolina]. There was a lady at the security gate and Big went through and “beep beep beep” and he’s telling the lady, “Look, I got a bullet in me, so the machine’s gonna keep going off. Why don’t you pat me down?” And she was like “No just keep going through the machine.” And he kept going through and through…I just thought that was f—- hilarious…After a while you’d forget he was fat or had those googly-eyes, you’d just see a funny motherf—– …I think Big would have been big on screen.

New York Post: Mother of Mario Winans' Son Claims Lack of Child Support

In January, the New York Post ran a story quoting Janel Bennett, the mother of Mario Winans son, Jordan. She claims that Winans is four months behind on child support, which is set at $4,500 a month.

"He pays $10,000 a month for a house in New Jersey and says he's broke," Bennett said. "I was homeless. I had to stay with friends in Chicago. He's not broke, he just had a hit song with Drake."

The Post also spoke with Winans, who said that he would wire Bennett $14,000 over the weekend.

"I take pride in my children," he said. It is what it is I always make sure they are taken care of."

Back in November, Liz Davis revealed that revealed that she had signed with a "new major label," referring to it as the label whose roster included country legend Reba McEntire. That would have meant The Valory Music Co.

At the time, Davis was not willing to speak further or confirm whether or not she was still affiliated with Bad Boy.

But, on her Facebook page is January, Davis was asked if she was still "with Diddy" and she replied, stating that she was "not with Bad Boy anymore" and telling the person, "you'll find out soon!"

Ironically, Davis released a new song on Friday titled "Bad Boy," where she sings "Bad Boy, you're no good for me." But, the song title has "no pun intended," according to her.

Earlier this month, Davis tweeted that she wanted to "answer everyone's questions about Bad Boy. But, news will be out soon, I promise you!"

Dirty Money has released their Valentine's Day mix of "Last Train to Paris" for free download at HotNewHipHop.com.

Titled "LoveLOVE vs. HateLOVE," this is a serious mixtape. With the way most "mixtapes" are put together these days, I hesitate to call it that. It's more like a remix album. Executive produced by Bad Boy producer Rob Holladay, the 14 track set features previously unreleased tracks and special remixes of tracks from the group's "Last Train to Paris" album.

The unreleased tracks are "Sade," "Private Entertainer" featuring Rick Ross, "Rollercoaster," "Make Love to You" and "Utopia." All of these records, with the exception of "Utopia," had appeared in the "Last Train to Paris" lyric book. "Make Love to You" was produced by Holladay and co-produced Yung Berg.

"HateLOVE vs. LoveLOVE," the "Last Train to Paris" Valentine's Day mix by Dirty Money, was supposed to be released last night at midnight Eastern Time on HotNewHipHop.com. The venue was announced by Diddy on Twitter yesterday.

Shortly before that time came, however, HotNewHipHop.com posted on their Twitter profile that the mixtape had been delayed by 3 hours to midnight Pacific Time.

However, now long past, when you visit their website, a countdown to midnight (beneath the mix's cover) has been replaced by the words "Coming Soon."

The Hollywood Reporter has a cover story on Justin Bieber, the team behind them and how they are working to ensure he maintains his success for the long haul.

L.A. Reid, the chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group, who signed Beiber to a 360 deal in 2008, shared an interesting story about Usher and how, when his voice changed due to puberty, he wanted to drop the singer. But, someone convinced him not to. Diddy.

Reid says he doesn’t live with regret, but dig a little deeper, and it becomes clear that one major hurdle from Reid’s past is coming into play with Bieber. Weeks from turning 17 on March 1, Bieber and his $100 million voice are changing. When this natural process of human development occurred with Usher, Reid, by his own admission, “lost it.” He recounts those trying months back in 1994: “I wasn’t there for Usher. I heard him at a showcase, and he couldn’t sing. I was embarrassed. It was like: ‘Damn, where’s the voice? What happened to his tone? Where’s the power and the range?’ It was all gone. I wanted to drop him. I wanted to be out of business with him. I broke his heart. I broke his mother’s heart. It was a very tough period in both our lives. Then someone said to me: ‘Don’t be a fool. Don’t sell your stock in Usher. He’s still going to be a star. He’s everything you thought he was the day you signed him.’ And that person was Puffy.” Says Usher: “No man is perfect and no executive knows how to make all the right decisions. I was shielded from a lot of it. My mother felt it more than anything. But losing my voice f---ed me up. I had to figure it out.”

It should be no surprise, then, to learn that the person hired to help Bieber navigate the tricky world of puberty is vocal coach Jan Smith, who got Usher through his early performances. “She has me doing vocal conditioning exercises regularly,” Bieber explains. Today Reid, a father of five, says he’s better prepared to handle Bieber’s maturation. “I know how to be encouraging now,” he says. “I wasn’t that way to Usher. I didn’t give him the same kind of love and support at the time. But Puffy was right.”

Diddy/Dirty Money Interview with WTAM 1100 Cleveland

In December, Dirty Money was interviewed by WTAM 1100 in Cleveland. They talk about the formation of the group, the development of "Last Train to Paris" and more. One of the more interesting parts was Diddy's answer when asked how Skylar Grey came to be featured on "Coming Home."

TB: Skylar Grey is featured on that track – she was pretty much unknown before this. How did she become a part of it?

Diddy: Yeah, she was writing, she wrote the song, with the chorus. Jay-Z helped me write the rest of the song, and Alex da Kid - who did "Airplanes," and “"Love The Way You Lie" - that's one of his main writers that he works with. I just loved her voice on the intro. We don't have egos, we have an allegiance to the song, and we also had a lot of different featured but we didn't have anybody that was kind of unknown, so we were like, "Hey let's keep her on the front, it sounds good." That's what music is about sounding good – let's leave it like that.

Advertising Age reports that, for the year ending January 23, Ciroc sales totaled $8.8 million, a gain of 71%. This moved the vodka ahead of competitor Belvedere, as the second best selling vodka in the U.S.

In the same period, Belvedere saw sales growth of 7.8% to $7.8 million. This was below the average for the super-premium vodka product category, which grew almost 14%, according to numbers provided by the Distilled Spirits Council.

Back in July, Diddy announced that Ciroc had surpassed Belvedere. The vodka sales leader is Grey Goose, who reported sales of $57.9 million, which was a gain of 1.2%.

The sales numbers exclude Wal-Mart stores, as well as club and liquor store sales.

For the purpose of the rankings, the New York area includes New York City and Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties in New York and Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Union counties in New Jersey. In order for a company to quality, they must be a privately owned business that is headquartered within the New York area and at least 51% of the company must be owned by minorities.

At the bottom of the rankings, Crain's notes that Bad Boy did not respond to this year's survey and that some data is estimated based on other published information. So, for example, the $300 million in revenue and 600 employee numbers are both estimates.

Back in November, Jay Pharoah of "Saturday Night Live" participated in a special Thanksgiving edition of "Weekend Update" with Seth Meyers. Pharoah suggested that white people had "all the Thanksgiving songs." When Meyers said that there weren't any Thanksgiving songs for white people, Pharoah said that there should be a hip-hop Thanksgiving song and proceeded to do impersonations of Jay-Z, Drake and Biggie. Back in August, Block Entertainment CEO Russell "Block" Spencer confirmed that Gorilla Zoe was still signed to Bad Boy, even with E1 Music's involvement in his project.

That may have changed. Last month, HipHopDX's Jake Paine reported that Zoe's upcoming album, "King Kong," would be his "first solo album without the involvement of Bad Boy Records or Sean "Diddy" Combs." The album is now set for a March 22 release.

Adding to this is the fact that Gorilla Zoe's "What's Goin On" has charted on Billboard, but not under Bad Boy. Instead, it is listed under Block/eOne/Atlantic.

I have been hearing whispers of this for a while, but have been unable to receive confirmation from anyone involved.

October through January were hectic months around here. With the release of "Last Train to Paris" and various professional and personal endeavors, I have had my head down, focused for the last few months. Sorry about that.

Due to this, we have only covered the bigger stories or the stories that happened to hit my proverbial desk. But, I didn't want you to miss out on the stories that we would normally cover. So, I have prepared a series of "news you might have missed" posts that I will be publishing over the next few days. These posts will consist of news items that were temporarily skipped, organized by article or topic, that I felt were still worth mentioning.

Thank you for reading Bad Boy Blog.

In a video interview with DJ Premier Blog, Premier and Pete Rock reflected on the creation of two classic Biggie records - "Juicy" and "Unbelievable." This was originally released back in December, but I am just seeing it now and had to share. It is well worth watching. The part about Biggie starts at the 35:50 mark.

In January, Swizz Beatz sampled The Notorious B.I.G. for "The Transporter" by Rick Ross, a track he released for free as part of Monster Mondays.

More Biggie fueled inspiration is included in the latest Monster Monday track, released yesterday. "Time to Get Paid" by DMX features a sample from The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" as the chorus. His line also serves as the title, as in "time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade."

You can download it for free on the Monster Mondays website.

Vibe has an interview with Dawn Richard, touching on a myriad of topics, related to both Dirty Money and herself. This includes her decision to work with Diddy (and the comments people make about the man) and some insight into "A Tell Tale Heart," her mixtape that will be released tonight.

You and this music thing are going strong. Tell me about the upcoming mixtape #ATellTaleHeart.

I’ve been in two groups, and I’ve done my duty in trying to be a team player. I love every minute of it and I’ve learned so much, but I’ve also gone through a whole lot these last four years. I’ve been homeless, I’ve been in a group, we did two platinum albums and then I lost my job. Our group dismantled, and I had to deal with that. I couldn’t grieve because I had to find out how I was gonna eat. I was struggling to write, then I made Dirty Money and Dirty Money was in the studio for three years. I never got a chance to grieve, cry, smile, laugh or anything about the last four years of my life. Because I’ve been in a group, I’ve had to cater to everyone else. This mixtape is my diary. This mixtape is every tear that I was supposed to cry, every smile that I was supposed to make, every angry feeling that I’ve ever felt from the time I made the band to now, a lot of things that happned in my love life and everything I never got a chance to say. And that’s why I called it ATellTaleHeart because, if each one of you fell into my heart, the heartbeats would sound like these songs. Flaws and all, here’s my diary and accept it.
