On July 4, ESPN aired their annual award program, The ESPYS, with a special performance of "Tightrope" by Janelle Monae. She also joined comedian/actor Will Ferrell for a skit where he portrayed supposed vuvuzela creator Jeff Vuvuzela. Monae came on stage to perform a duet with the character, as they took turns on Roberta Flack’s "Tonight I Celebrate My Love."
Janelle Monae spoke with Kev Geoghegan of the BBC News about concept albums.
A debut album with such an esoteric concept sounds like a risky move for an emerging artist but the self-assured Monae insists she never set out to make life difficult.
"I just had a very important story to tell," she explains.
"I believe the story of Cindi Mayweather and the story of the ArchAndroid was important enough for us to write music around and create a graphic novel and we'll be shooting a film."
