06/27: Big Boi Presents Janelle Monae with Vanguard Award at ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards
As I reported
earlier this month, Janelle Monae was honored at 23rd annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards on Saturday Night. She was given the Vanguard Award, which "recognizes the impact of musical genres that help shape the future of American music." Past honorees have included The Killers, Santigold, Sara Bareilles, The All-American Rejects, The Strokes, and the Beastie Boys.
According to a
press release, the award was presented to her by Big Boi. He referred to her as "high funktress," according to
MTV News, who says that Monae accepted the award on behalf of the Wondaland Arts Society.
