07/16: Voletta Wallace Refuses to Clear Biggie Sample for Monica's "Anything (to Find You)" with Lil' Kim on the Song
Last week,
Monica premiered "Anything (to Find You)," a Missy Elliott produced record featuring vocals from Elliott, Rick Ross and Lil' Kim.
On the song, Elliott mimics Diddy's vocals from The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Who Shot Ya and the "Who Shot Ya" beat, itself sampled from David Porter's "I'm Afraid the Masquerade is Over," is also featured.
When the song debuted on the Billboard charts, however, the version listed did not feature Lil' Kim.
Billboard's Erika Ramirez and Alex Chapman reported that Lil' Kim had been removed due to unspecified contractual issues.
On Twitter, Monica revealed that Lil' Kim had been removed because Voletta Wallace refused to clear the sample with the rapper on the record. Biggie's estate is led by Ms. Wallace and Biggie's widow, singer Faith Evans. In recent years, Lil' Kim has aimed pointed remarks at both and it would be naive to think that such things come without consequence.
"I am just finding out what has happened to my single and myself and Missy are beyond hurt that Lil' Kim was removed,"
Monica said in a series of tweets. She's our friend, a legend and Lil' Kim will get the respect she deserves at all costs. The clearance was revoked and I'm fighting to get it reinstated by the Biggie Estate. We respect all parties involved and were gonna do WHATEVER to keep the song as is because Lil' Kim [is] the bizness on the record. I am as thorough as they come and I LOVE Lil' Kim. Bottom line is Ms. Wallace has the final say and she said no. If we put it out, we get sued."
