12/17: Jay Electronica Talks "Shiny Suit Theory" and Diddy Saying "F*** the Underground"
Rap Radar's Elliott Wilson shared a feature that he did for
Respect magazine with Jay Electronica.
After the New Orleans rapper signed with Jay-Z's "Roc Nation," a song titled "Shiny Suit Theory" hit the internet. On the record, he raps:
Me and Puff, we was chillin' in Miami
He said, n****, fuck the underground, you need to win a GRAMMY
For yo mama and yo family
They need to see you shined up
You built a mighty high ladder, let me see you climb up
N****, what you scared of? Terrorize these artificial rap n**** and spread love
Pollinate the ear buds like you supposed to, Spit it for the culture
Pay no attention to the critics and the vultures
They rather have a shot of Belvy just to spite you
They cast the judgments 'cause they feel they got the right to
F*** 'em, I let the dice roll like the father did
I gotta shine, it's in my blood, I'm a Harlem kid
I treat my babies right, treat my ladies ladylike
Hit 'em with a remix, then make sure that they play me twice
I thought you said it's the return of the black kings
Luxurious homes, fur coats and fat chains
Talking with Wilson, Electronica shared some of the back story behind the record, including Diddy's comments:
... That leads right into "Shiny Suit Theory," which relates directly to Puff because nobody got through to my head the way he did.
Puff can make a statement like "F*** the underground," which is a blasphemous statement in rap. But he doesn’' mean that as a diss. He means, "We're supposed to be out here shining." Maybe I'm never gonna see the value of a Grammy. But for somebody to be able to show me the value of it, what it means for people to see you get that, and the inspiration of it. It's like the Saints winning the Super Bowl. Yeah it's only a f*****' game but what it does for the city, what it does for the people...
