I've had some time to digest
Tuesday's episode of "Making the Band 4." For a full, detailed run down, please check out my
live blog recap. Now, I'd like to go into a little more detail, analysis wise, speaking only of what we saw on the show and what we have seen play out in public, previously.
It's clear that the girls have had issues with one another, due to their own personality conflicts, insecurities and, in some cases, legitimate concerns. It's been going on, privately, for a while. Little has come out previously, but in
July of 2007, there were some contentious messages sent from Dawn and Aubrey's MySpace pages. During the show on Tuesday, Dawn flat out said they don't trust one another. Aundrea blasted Aubrey, in a beat around the bush fashion, for her extracurricular activities. Aubrey had some comments that related to Dawn, as well.
All acts have their complete and total loyalists who feel they can do no wrong. Every group has them. Danity Kane is no exception. I read a lot of comments by Danity Kane fans feeling that they aren't handled correctly, that Diddy "doesn't know" how to promote them, that Bad Boy is a bad label to be signed to, and so on and so forth. With some fans, not all, but some... it's always something. And when something doesn't go right, it's always someone else. But, the reality is that Danity Kane, and most other acts on Bad Boy, have been promoted in at least a solid fashion, if not in a very good way.
There's a reason that people in and around the industry say that Diddy is a marketing genius. I'm not saying there haven't been missed opportunities and that some of them haven't been rather blatant (if not with Danity Kane, with other acts).
I've been openly critical of some of Bad Boy's marketing efforts. But, at the end of the day, when you sit down and tally up the scoreboard - Danity Kane has been promoted more than nearly any act - not just on Bad Boy, but period. Almost every solo artist or group out there would kill for the level of promotion they've had.
And that promotion is why they've also sold more records than most acts. All acts have fans with sharp teeth that come to blame everyone but the group when things don't go completely right. Marketing wise, Danity Kane is in a very good situation, and that shouldn't be forgotten. It's an important part of why they have experienced this level of success.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying they aren't talented. They are. I like them. I am a Danity Kane fan. I have both of their albums (multiple copies, in fact). I own - that is, legally obtained - all of the music they have released. But, talent is only one part of the overall picture here, from a business and personal perspective.
They have their own problems and they are responsible for them. Whether it be between them or with their management. Diddy or Bad Boy isn't responsible for taking care of all aspects of their life. That's not what a record deal is. He's also not responsible for informing all Danity Kane members - or Aubrey - if he has one of them sing on some demos for his album. I've seen some fans commenting that Diddy should tell them if Dawn was going solo. One problem: she wasn't. A demo is a demo - a reference vocal. Whatever you want to call it. It's Diddy's album, not Dawn's album. Even if she turns out to be a featured artist.
And, as I recall, with the exception of perhaps Shannon, the rest have all been doing solo stuff already. Before the latest album came out, Dawn would routinely post new solo tracks of her own on her MySpace, some of which she produced, as well. Sometimes she'd say they were in consideration for Danity Kane. She was also featured on a track from rapper
Nicky Mac called "Goodlife" and
Cherri V's remix to "Fast Car".
Aubrey was featured on "Do Yo Dance" by Atlantic Records artist Cupid and recorded some vocals for Donnie Klang's album, that were cut. D. Woods was featured on Gorilla Zoe's album and has her own writing team, The Girls Club. Aundrea was featured on Baby Bash's "Dip With You." So, for people to act like they haven't already been doing solo vocals, that's not accurate.
I've also seen people saying that Diddy needed to communicate with Aubrey and/or the group. About what, though? Dawn recording demo vocals for Diddy's album? Why should he tell anyone that? Dawn's a grown woman. If she wants to tell them, she will. Diddy is the chairman and CEO of Bad Boy Entertainment and a bonafide, international star that has sold tens of millions of records. He doesn't need to call Aubrey and say "Hey Aubrey, just wanted to let you know I'm having Dawn sing on some demo tracks for my album. Hope that's OK." That doesn't happen. It shouldn't need to happen.
And this is a part of a problem that plagues Diddy, with former artists. He's an executive, but he's in public, he's a star in his own right and he actually spends some time with his acts. He appears with them, he hypes them, he does all of these things. So, because he is known and he is in the public eye, sometimes artists take advantage of that and forget he is an executive, because he doesn't sit up in his offices and infrequently come out or listen to music. Think about other record company executives and how often you see them.
Another thing that I've seen some people say is that Aubrey stood up and was strong and defended herself and so on. From my perspective, she didn't. She did what she has done numerous times, which is to say something without much consideration and disrespect the person she was talking to.
"Diddy kicked Aubrey out for expressing an opinion!" No, he didn't. Not from what we saw, anyway. How you say something is as important as what you are saying. I wrote about this
in my book (search for "grand delusion"). It wasn't what she said, it was how she said it. She was condescending. And, really, this is a build up, with Aubrey, anyway. It's not just this one conversation.
Time and time again, she's done things that have hurt the group, created unnecessary drama and brought unflattering attention to herself. She persistently asserts that it is not her fault, that it's just the media. But, that's just not the case here. I give her a pass for
stroking the fires of the pregnancy rumors with a practical joke, but when she
allows people to believe that she's joining The Pussycat Dolls,
gets called out by a stylist for being uncooperative or, more recently, gives a
disastrously vulgar interview to Complex... it's not the media. It's her. I wonder what the other members of Danity Kane thought, reading that Complex interview?
I wouldn't usually mention someone's physical appearance, but that's changed, too, from when Diddy picked her. Everyone changes and that's cool, but with Aubrey... it's drastic. Take a look at
this photo from Blender in 2005. And then look at
this photo from TRL in July. If you didn't know they were both Aubrey, you might not realize that they were the same person.
I've seen some fans say that Diddy can't kick her out. But, he can. Diddy should leave Danity Kane alone, some will say. Diddy created Danity Kane. It's not like this was a group of friends who showed up and sang for him and he signed them on the spot. He picked these five girls to be in his girl group. They are free to go where they want, but Danity Kane is Diddy's creation. So, to say Diddy can't do this, or that, as far as the lineup... he definitely can do it.
And, while I enjoy Aubrey's contributions to various tracks, she's not the group. Just because she gets the most press - that isn't necessarily a good thing, either. Especially with the type of press she's made a habit of creating. The four remaining girls or three, if D. Woods leaves, could be fine More likely, I think, they would add someone new into the mix, someone who did get along with the remaining members. Groups change. For Aubrey, it may just be something that has been a long time coming. You can be the problem child (by her own admission, if I recall) for a while, but eventually, that act gets old. And then it's time to move on. Time might be up.
We'll see what happens next Tuesday on "Making the Band 4." It's sure to be reality TV drama filled. It'll be on at 9 PM ET on MTV.
