During a recent club appearance, Diddy said that if you weren't drinking Ciroc, you were drinking "pee pee." Diddy himself drinks more than just Ciroc, so of course, this was a marketing stunt. Reports indicate he said it in a club in New York, but I know he said it in a club in Miami. So, maybe he's said it more than once.

Anyway, this marketing stunt has begotten another marketing stunt. Martin Silver, who owns vodka brand Georgi Argent, put out a press release demanding an apology and promising to deliver a toilet full of Ciroc to Diddy's office and he followed through, according to reports by the New York Daily News and My Fox New York.

Honestly, it didn't seem like it got all that much attention as far as people actually showing up (see the clip below), but it's been successful because it was picked up by many outlets online (and probably offline) and put the brand in front of people who hadn't heard of it (like myself, a non-drinker) and there is always a segment of people who dislike a celebrity or public figure, so the stunt will resonate with those folks, as well.

Pretty funny that protesting Ciroc actually involves buying more Ciroc. But, that's the point, I think. At the end of the day, this will likely lead to more sales for both vodka brands. The chances of Diddy apologizing for such an off-hand statement are probably between slim and none, but Mr. Silver likely knows that and doesn't even want an apology. It's a show; it's entertainment. It's marketing.

The Huffington Post has the press release announcing this year's Diddy and Ciroc New Year's Eve get home safe program.

NEW YORK, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- In an unprecedented effort to promote sophisticated celebration this holiday season, the makers of CIROC Ultra Premium Vodka -- the "Official Vodka of New Year's Eve" -- and Sean "Diddy" Combs will provide thousands of New Yorkers and visitors to the city with a chance for a safe ride home on New Year's Eve by helping to pick up Yellow Cab fares.

In partnership with the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) and E! Entertainment, Diddy and CIROC will distribute thousands of debit cards, valued up to $15, in high-traffic New York City locations for use in one of the city's 13,000-plus taxicabs on New Year's Eve, so adult revelers can get home safely. CIROC and E! Entertainment are further supporting the initiative with a message from Combs currently running on taxicab televisions in New York City through January 1, 2009.

"As the 'Official Vodka of New Year's Eve,' we have a responsibility to remind everyone to get home safely on this most celebratory of nights," said Combs, who entered into a strategic marketing alliance with the spirit brand more than one year ago. "New York is the world's most iconic New Year's Eve city, so let's lead by example and show everyone that a sophisticated holiday celebration doesn't just end when the ball drops, but when everyone gets home safely."

"It is always good to see companies like CIROC highlighting the importance of safety and responsibility," added Matthew W. Daus, Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman. "Social responsibility and the taxicab industry have always gone hand in hand, so we appreciate CIROC's partnership with the industry to ring in 2009 by helping people to celebrate in a thoughtful and intelligent way."

Bloomberg reports that, according to Ciroc's marketing director Marc Strachan, Diageo will soon release new flavors of the grape based vodka: coconut and red-berry.

Furthermore, they also revealed that 400,000 cases of Ciroc were sold for the year ending June 30. Compare this to 60,000 cases that sold for the six months ending on that same date in 2007. They would partner with Diddy in October of that year.

Thanks Theo.
