From The Jamaica Observer:

And this just in: Highly placed sources have revealed that VP Records and Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment have reached an agreement, which will handle the marketing and international distribution of Elephant Man's forthcoming release. The deal, according to sources, will see the release of Elephant's new album (the first in a multi-album deal) sometime in 2007.

Reuters Newsblogs has highlights from the interview for their story:

Q: What’s changed about the way the music industry works now from when you started out?

In the music industry we’ve been through some rough times, still are, but it’s definitely getting better. We used to shun the Internet now we bow down and embrace it. I think we’re getting rewarded for it. But at the end of the day if you don’t have a hit record, you don’t have hit record. You can use the Internet and marketing all you want but you still need hit records and that’s what we do at Bad Boy, we make hits.

From Reuters:

"Our expectation when we did the deal with Bad Boy was to break one new artist every 18 months and to reintroduce P. Diddy," said Warner Music Executive Vice President Kevin Liles this week. "He's broken three new artists this year so it's over our expectation, but still under what we know he can do."

Warner Music does not break down revenue from its various labels, but SoundScan sales data show that the company's labels collectively accounted for an 18.7 percent share of the urban music sector in the year to date. In 2005, their share of that market was 13.8 percent.

While Combs cannot claim all the credit for Warner's resurgence in the hip-hop/R&B genre, analysts said Bad Boy was having a halo effect on other labels within the Warner group.

Check it out. Good stuff.

... New York feel it in they gut
If Jay comin' back, then the world need Puff
Emotional bond to the game, I'm attached
I gave most of you dudes life, now get back
I'm the man that beef with a whole coast
Lost my best friend and still see his ghost
Your lawsuits lost, I walk through courts
So disrespectful, I spit when I talk
I recognize n***** tryin' a copy my style
But, never been a n**** this fly, holdin' it down for this long
N****, I let y'all eat for this long

Well, I guess I have to talk about this nonsense again, even though I don't really have to. It's too "newsworthy" to avoid. I just got a quick listen to the 50 Cent diss track called "The Bomb" aimed at Diddy. He didn't say all that much, but here is the really absurd part:

Who shot Biggie Smalls?
We don't get them, they gon' kill us all
Man, Puffy know who hit that n****
Man, that n**** soft
He scared them boys from the west side'll break him off

So, who did it then, 50? He says something about some $50,000 for travel expenses on some tour, as well. Hard to really make out what he's talking about. I used to like 50 alright, used to spend money on his music. But, when he started doing this stuff, I basically introduced a 50 ban. I haven't spent a time on any of his music since and I won't. I might have to become familar with The Game, actually. I like that It's Okay (One Blood) song he put out.

Anyway, getting down to business. Speaking of business, that is the keyword. Business. This stuff is just stupid. Anyone who does business with 50 should be weary. Let me explain. Sometimes, when people talk about Diddy, they say things like "paper gangster." But, that just isn't consistent. People act like Diddy is doing something illegal or underhanded.

He's not. On the contrary, making sure your paper work is in order is what everyone should do. People act like being personally responsible is some sort of virus. I signed a contract, well, hey, I wanna leave now, who cares? That's nonsense and it's a problem. You go to work at X Corporation. You sign a contract. Period. You are held to that contract, good or bad. If you want the contract voided, you have to go through the appropriate legal steps and even then, there may not be an easy out, if there is not one in the contract.

So, 50 called Diddy and they can't agree. That's too bad because that's business. It's not being a gangster, it's simply following the contract. But, instead, 50 chooses to act like this. Knowing this, if you're a business, how can you do business with 50? How can you expect him to fulfill a contract that he signs if this is how he handles such matters? If 50 pulled this stuff with Reebok, they'd throw him into court in half a second. The only reason 50 can get away with this stuff is because people let him get away with it in this industry. In pretty much any other industry, this stuff doesn't float. 50 is trying to run a game on people. It doesn't fit. But, that doesn't mean people aren't falling for it.

From AllHipHop.com's rumors section:

Now, I knew this, but I needed a few co-signs before I put it up. When 50 Cent was on Whoo Kid's Hot 97 show, he was upset about the way Puff won't let Mase off Bad Boy records. Well, that part we know, right? But, I heard 50 said that Puff wants to do a joint venture with Mase and G-Unit. 50 reportedly replied, "Why should I do a joint venture with someone who doesn't even produce records?" Anyway, I heard that 50 also claimed that Diddy knows who killed Biggie and wasn't talking for fear of death. He said a lot of stuff about Diddy, which is an indication that the winter might be hotter than the summer.

Assuming it's true, I have two "words." They are "lol" and "sigh." I was thinking of not mentioning this, just because 50's just trying to get attention and I don't really want to give it to him, but there you have it. I hope 50 is aware of what a contract is.

From Billboard:

In yet another big week for new albums on The Billboard 200, Danity Kane comes out on top of the crop with its self-titled debut. The set sold 234,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving Bad Boy Records its seventh No. 1 album and first since 2003's "Bad Boys II" soundtrack.

The winners of MTV's "Making the Band 3" in 2005, quintet Danity Kane exceeded the two other "Making the Band" debuts' opening week tallies: O-Town's self-titled began with 145,000 at No. 5 in 2001 and Da Band's "Too Hot for T.V." started with 204,000 at No. 2 in 2003.

Excellent! Congratulations to everyone involved.

I had previously written that it would be the 8th album to hit #1, but I was wrong. After checking the numbers, I found that it is, in fact, the 7th. Sorry for the confusion.

... Then it was Diddy's turn to take the spotlight. He grabbed the mic and let everyone know that his group Danity Kane will be coming in on the top spot of next week's Billboard albums chart. He also congratulated the crowd on being invited to the party, for which the dress code was "Sexy & Flawless." ...

Soon, the floor was packed to grinding-room-only status as Goldfinger threw on Diddy's "Come to Me," which he brought back several times.

"It feels good to be back," Diddy, still holding the mic, said. "I missed you. Just rock now, don't stop now. We Bad Boy baby, you ain't gotta play the wall. You can dance again. Ask a young lady, 'Would you like to dance?' "

It’s nice to know someone at Warner Music Group — aside from Edgar Bronfman Jr. — even has $18 million. Currently the company has five albums on the charts, none of them selling very well.

Only two are from Warner; the others come from Atlantic Records. And two of those come from Sean 'Diddy' Combs’ Bad Boy Entertainment.

What?! If Cassie and (especially) New Joc City aren't/haven't sold well, not a heck of a lot has. New Joc City has had very solid sales, now over 600,000 units. Cassie has moved just over 140,000 in 2 weeks. Not as impressive as Joc, but still, a good debut.

I have updated our release production history page to be current with the release of the Danity Kane, which I received today.

There are a couple of notable things. First, with the production credit for "Press Pause," D-Dot has reached 50 tracks. This is a mark that only 3 other producers (Diddy, Mario Winans and Stevie J.) have reached.

Second, with his complete production credit over Cassie's album as well as the track on the Danity Kane album, Ryan Leslie is now in the top 10, tied at 10 with Ron "Amen-Ra" Lawrence and Tony Dofat.

There is an article about Cassie at USATODAY.com:

A gift keeps giving: Cassie had just started working with producer Ryan Leslie when her mother asked her to record her a song for her birthday. Cassie and Leslie did a sexy duet called Kiss Me, and when Leslie played it for music executive Tommy Mottola, he offered to be her manager. She later signed a record deal with Diddy's Bad Boy Entertainment. Cassie, who moved to New York last year after graduating high school, says Leslie wrote most and produced all of her album with little interference from heavy-hitters Mottola and Diddy. "They saw the chemistry we had. People know that I'm not a super singer like Aretha Franklin or anything like that, but you realize the love of music between me and Ryan is great. So we want to just have fun and make music that people can sing and dance to."

If, by some twist of events, the Danity Kane album does happen to hit #1 on The Billboard 200 and manages to beat out Outkast, Christina Aguilera, etc., that will be awesome. There are only 52 #1's in a year (assuming that there is a different one every week and that doesn't happen, so there are less), so you can imagine how rare a thing it is. But, if they managed to do it, it'll be the first #1 album Bad Boy has had since Bad Boys II: The Soundtrack, which was released on July 15, 2003.

It would be the 7th Bad Boy release to receive such an honor, following in the steps of Bad Boys II: The Soundtrack, We Invented the Remix, Born Again, Harlem World, No Way Out and Life After Death.

Edit: I was wrong. Emotional reached #9, not #1. I thought that seemed weird when I wrote it. :)

According to Atlantic Records:

An out-of-the-box phenomenon at retail, DANITY KANE, which hit stores just two days ago, sold nearly 90,000 units in its first day of release, selling out at most stores across the country.

'The formula works like this: Diddy, Bad Boy Records, talented and beautiful artists, and the marketing strategy,' said Steve Lerner, Circuit City's Senior National Buyer/Music. 'It’s the culmination of many factors, and Danity Kane actually brings back the excitement of what the music business is all about - Artist Development!'

'Danity 'Co-Kane'… people are fiendin' for it!' commented Violet Brown, Director of Urban Music for Trans World Entertainment. 'It is great to have a new title of this magnitude!'

DANITY KANE' is already the #1 album on iTunes, with an average fan ranking of 4-and-a-half stars (out of 5). More than 300 fans have reviewed the album. The album's Jim Jonsin-produced first single, 'Show Stopper,' is #3 on iTunes, just behind singles from Justin Timberlake and Fergie, and debuted at #5 on SoundScan’s Digital Song Chart, selling more than 55,000 units. Danity Kane is the #5 most searched artist on Yahoo! and ranks at #2 on MySpace with 12.5 million streams. The group has three additional songs on the iTunes Top 100 chart-'Sleep on It', 'Ride For You', and 'One Shot'.

With the latest Hot 100 chart, I noticed that New Joc City had 2 songs reach the top 19 ("It's Goin' Down" reached #3 and "I Know You See It" is now at #19). This is a big deal and no small feat (for any label). Just a little blast from the past. I was clearing out some links and came across MTV News article talking about various people/groups submiting rock remixes of Victory to Diddy. In the end, they went with the Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor) one, but I wouldn't mind hearing the others, of course. But, then, I'm a fan, so that's natural.

On the heels of the "All About The Benjamins" rock remix (currently the top-selling single in the country) Puffy has put out the call for another rock remix, this time for "Victory," the next single from his "No Way Out" album.

Reznor has already submitted a rock version of "Victory" as have Anthrax, the Deftones, Dinosaur Jr. mastermind J Mascis, and Fuzzbubble, the only rock act on Puffy's Bad Boy label. Korn and Megadeth are also poised to get in on the act as well.

Wal-Mart will also have an exclusive download, according to their site. What's the download? Again, no idea. But, you'll know as soon as I do!

The group was interviewed by ELLEgirl:

EG: Do you ever feel like the show is edited in such a way that you come across badly or not quite accurately?

D.Woods: In the media, there's a tendency to give women characters. But in reality, there are so many different sides to a person. Maybe you love to be wild and crazy, you love to be at home cuddling to a movie, you cry and are extra-emotional about things that hurt you, you fight for things you believe in. Every woman embodies that, but on television, sometimes you get pigeonholed and that is what society is taught to be entertained by....

Aubrey: Some of us are addicted to reading those online forums, and honey let me tell you, 'She looks like a leather handbag that's been dragged through the dryer three times' did not make me feel good that day!

According to MTV News, Diddy will make his "singing debut" on a duet with Keyshia Cole called "Last Night."

... He's going full-throttle as a vocalist on one song.

"I make my singing debut on Press Play," he said. "I did this duet with Keyshia Cole called 'Last Night.' I represent all of the shower singers out there. I'm not the greatest singer, but I have a lot of emotion in my voice, and this song is a totally different sound for me. I wanted to take some risks on this album, and ironically it's a lot of people's favorite track. I had a lot of fun doing it."

From The Kansas City Star:

Weld Wheel Industries, a leading maker of high-performance automotive wheels, on Thursday sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors and said it plans to sell its assets.

The decades-old family-owned business said it lost $1.1 million in the first six months of this year on net sales of $21.8 million. The abbreviated bankruptcy petition did not break down Weld Wheel’s debts, but other court documents stated the company has total assets of $31.6 million. ...

Last year, Weld Wheel teamed up with hip-hop musician Sean “P. Diddy” Combs to produce a new line of custom, precision-forged aluminum rims for sports trucks, luxury SUVs and other high-end vehicles. The 50-50 joint venture with Combs’ Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group produces and sells “Sean John Wheels,” which retail for from $700 to $3,000 each.

The Associated Press has an interview with Cassie at SFGate.com:

AP: Speaking of versatility, any plans to crossover into acting?

Cassie: I've gotten a couple of scripts. They are both Denzel Washington films. One that he is directing and one that he is actually in. I'm excited about it and nervous. I've never really acted before. I did plays when I was little but that has nothing to do with being on the big screen. I want to do it after I take lessons. It will be good to cross over and try new things. I say all the time, the music industry isn't the same anymore and selling records isn't enough. You have to build yourself as a brand.

You can listen to the entire album over at The Leak at MTV.com. Showstopper is missing the Yung Joc verse, though, so I'm not sure if it will make the album or not at this point. I liked the verse, myself.

The tracklisting is as follows:

2. Heartbreaker
3. Want It
4. Right Now
5. Show Stopper
6. Hold Me Down
7. Come Over (Interlude)
8. Ooh Ahh
9. Press Pause
10. Ain't True Interlude
11. Ride For You
12. Touchin' My Body
13. Back Up
14. Stay With Me
15. Sleep On It

So, Sleep On It makes the album.

From MTV News:

"She had her first television performance, and she had an all right performance," he said. "You could hear the nervousness in her voice. And to be honest, I kind of smiled at it, because it made me really appreciate what I really love about her: She's a regular person. And we, as artists, we sometimes get nervous. I told her it's like riding a bike: You're gonna fall down, you got to keep on getting on it. I'm with her through her development, and I have no questioning on her ability, on her singing ability. It just made me appreciate that she got nervous, and it was kind of cute to me, to be honest.

"It takes time when you're developing a new artist," he continued. "You can't be fickle. Some people are going to have good days and bad days. The thing about Bad Boy is, we're with our artists through all days. She's not an artist that has a problem with her vocals or singing. You've got to understand that success for her is coming out of nowhere. It's just so huge, and sometimes everybody handles it differently. So I'm quite sure she'll get over it. She's going to have to. That's part of being a recording artist, and sometimes it takes time. I don't care how many performances it is, I'm going to be with her until she gets it right."

Updating previous entries, Diddy apparently has some ideas for when Rooney comes to town:

"I am waiting to put a definite date in the diary for Wayne to come out and we're both working it around our busy lives," P Diddy told the Daily Star. AllHipHop.com has a new interview with Yung Joc:

AllHipHop.com: With any success comes controversy. In a recent issue of XXL, [Producer,] Nitti stated that he owns 75 percent of the publishing for “It’s Goin’ Down” and also attacks you as a lyricist. Any response?

Yung Joc: I’mma tell you like this man. In that article, Nitti was upset with the fact that I didn’t sign with him. Everything in that article is bulls**t, okay? It is what it is, he apologized for it, and I accepted his apology and kept it moving. He apologized over the radio in Atlanta; we accepted it, and kept it moving.

Check out this question:

AllHipHop.com: A few Bad Boy artists have fallen victim to the sophomore slump, as we speak Puff is in a legal battle with 50 Cent over Ma$e. Were you worried about any of this when you and Block signed the deal?

I like these kinds of questions where writers twist things. What exactly do sophomore slump and Mase have in common? Mase released 3 Bad Boy albums. Right before/after his second (i.e. sophomore) album was released, he retired - and it still went gold! His third album went gold, too.

And what exactly do sophomore slump and Mase trying to get out of his contract have to do with each other? He signed a contract with Bad Boy. That's why there is a dispute. You sign a contract, you are held to it. "Were you worried" that you'd be held to the contract you signed?! This is a big problem in the world - a lack of accountability. Anyway, Mase and sophomore slump... Mase trying to get out of his contract... I struggle to see the relevance, other than looking for attention. Anyway...

3. Cassie rates rappers. Cassie appeared on Hot 97 earlier this week. No, the Myspace sensation did not confirm that "Me and You" was indeed about, ummmm...brains, but during an interview with Angie Martinez, Cassie did reveal that Omarion and Bow Wow tried to holla. Later on during Funkmaster Flex's show, Cassie provided more depth into the episode, detailing that Omarion had his little brother give her his number while Bow Wow also sent his math through a third party. The beauty then rated rappers on a scale from 1 to 10. Ne-Yo, Omarion, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Yung Joc all received 7s while Derek Jeter and Young Jeezy earned 5s. Juelz Santana scored a six while Bow Wow with 8 and T.I. with a 10, were the highest rated. Cassie also noted that Pharrell Williams was her top choice and was clueless as to who NBA Champion, Dwayne Wade was.

It's a cool video. At first, I wasn't digging Diddy's laid back approach on parts of the first verse, but in the end, after watching it a few times, I like it. It's nitpicking, I know, but when he says "did it before, do it again" it sounds like he's smiling, but he barely moves his mouth in the video. But, anyway, good video, good song.
