Diddy was named to TIME's 100 most influential people:

Sean Combs is a Renaissance man. I have observed mostly from afar his evolution from music magnate to fashion force. In all his roles, Combs, known these days as Diddy, has been on the forefront of pushing hip-hop culture into the mainstream. He is a record producer, entertainment mogul, writer, arranger, designer, actor, singer and three-time Grammy Award–winning rapper. And at age 36, Combs is worth an estimated $315 million.

Congrats.

From MiamiHerald.com:

Patrons of Sunday night's Soul Food party at The Forge were in for a big surprise with the unannounced fashion show of Azzure and Indigo-Red Denim's clothing lines for men and women at Glass. Venus Williams, Andre Harrell, Zack Crocket, Greg Anthony, Mitch Richmond and DJ Clue were there to show their support of the new chic and trendy clothing lines. Also there that night digging into the soul food were none other than Puff -- er, Diddy, who just shot Making the Band along with mega-producer Timbaland. There were, of course, cameras following Diddy while he did so.

Not that that's news...

AllHipHop.com has an interview with Yung Joc:

AllHipHop.com: So the hook actually turned out to be the last thing, right?

Yung Joc: Exactly, and that’s why I tell people, there’s no protocol in making a record. It could go either way, you could’ve written a hit song before ever hearing the track, you never know. I had to go home and sleep on “It’s Goin’ Down” for two days, then I came back and dropped the hook. Matter of fact, we were getting ready for some big party and I’m at the studio trying to come up with a hook or something to make the song right. It was just me and Miss B [of So So Def fame], Diddy, and Chino Dolla were in the studio Everyone left to go get some outfits for the party, except me and Miss B. When they left I made up the hook and I got her to record me, so by the time they got back the song was finished.

On MySpace, a lady calling herself Jessica Garcia posted a while back saying that she was signed to Bad Boy and Interscope. The whole thing struck me as odd for any number of reasons, but I couldn't say with any conviction. However, I have just received confirmation that she is, in fact, not signed to Bad Boy.

Fox News has an article about Citizen Change, the non profit group that was launched to get voters to register. It features information on the donations that the group has accepted as well as it's expenses. It quickly becomes clear that the writer doesn't care for Diddy and there are a clear inaccuracy or two. Most blatantly:

The bulk of Bad Boy Records' sales in the past are attributed to countless repackagings and updated recordings by deceased rapper Notorious B.I.G.

Um. Bad Boy has released 41 albums in it's history to date. 3 of those albums could be described as "repackagings and updated records by deceased rapper Notorious B.I.G.", if you wish to count the Ready to Die Remaster in that count. Let's use the RIAA to gauge sales.

Born Again was certified 2x platinum. That means over 2,000,000 sold. I am not sure if the Ready to Die Remaster was considered it's own disc or just the same Ready to Die, but in any case, it wasn't certified and the previous Ready to Die album was certified 4 times platinum about 5 years before the remaster was released. So, if it is considered the same as the first Ready to Die release, it didn't sell enough to get it to a 5th platinum certification, even combined with continued sales of the original release. So, the most optimistic thing you can say for it is that it has sold under 1,000,000 copies to date. Finally, Duets: The Final Chapter has been certified platinum, over 1,000,000 copies sold. So, the 3 releases in all have been certified as selling somewhere over 3,000,000 copies.

Now, the writer said these 3 releases accounted for a "bulk" of Bad Boy's sales. A bulk means a majority. So... the best selling Bad Boy release ever, depending on your metric is Life After Death, which was certified 10x platinum. Life After Death was not a repackaging or an updated recording, it was a finished album that Biggie and was going to release, but he died shortly before it was released. Over 10,000,000 copies. So, that's just 1 release and the "bulk" statement is already done. Of course, you could take the second best selling Bad Boy album, Diddy's No Way Out, which is certified 7x platinum (over 7,000,000 copies). Heck, take Mase's Harlem World, if you'd like. That one is certified 4x platinum (over 4,000,000 copies). But, the point is, that Biggie's "repackagings and updated records" count for only a small portion of Bad Boy's overall sales history.

It's been cool, man. I'm very happy that the situation is what it is. I got haters and I got people who love what I'm doing right now. I'm going to keep going forward. ...

From newsday.co.tt:

Patrons were disappointed, however, when the night’s headliner, Diddy finally appeared onstage around midnight and performed for approximately 15 minutes before closing off the show.

The star and his large entourage reportedly arrived by private jet at Crown Point International Airport around 9.15 pm after rescheduling several times. Following a VIP reception at the airport, where he met with Senator Rennie Dumas, Diddy was rushed to the Plymouth venue for his performance.

Diddy appeared on stage with Doug E Fresh. However, his short performance left the audience unfulfilled and heaping praises on the local artistes. He left the island shortly before 8 am yesterday.

Anyone know what he performed with Doug E. Fresh?

From an interview with Foxx:

Are you telling me that your mates P. Diddy and Kanye need help with the ladies?

No, they’re definitely good on their own (laughs). I can tell you hanging out with Diddy is a whole album in itself, every night – that dude is the greatest. Kanye West is like the budding young producer, this is his first experience of being a star so he’s all bright-eyed and ‘Is this what it is?’ I’m like ‘Yeah, enjoy it.’

Of all your celeb pals – who’s the biggest party animal?

Diddy. Myself and Diddy together is crazy. Me and Diddy actually had to wean ourselves off each other because it got too much! He does it on such a level that you can only marvel at it – it’s truly incredible.

Maybe he'll guest on Diddy's album.

So, I recently placed an order with my record club to get the rest of the Jay-Z, Nas and LL Cool J albums that I don't have. The LL ones have arrived and as I am ripping them, I notice this bit in the booklet's for the "Radio" and "Walking With a Panther" album booklets:

MANAGEMENT: SEAN "PUFFY" COMBS BAD BOY MANAGEMENT

Radio's copyright statement says 1985 (and the album released on March 28, 1985, according to Amazon.com). So, that would mean that Diddy was managing LL when he was 15? Or, at least, he was the contact listed in the album notes.

Tobago Bureau reports that:

Fresh promised to “mix it up a bit and make it more like a party vibes” during his performance this evening and disclosed plans to perform a few of the classics with rap superstar Diddy.

Diddy however, reportedly told CEO of CL Communications Tony Maharaj that he was unsure of the exact time he would “feel like flying in” for his performance. Diddy will be arriving on his private jet.

Should be good.

From the futon critic:

The news comes after yet another disastrous performance for the series. Last night's installment took a distant fifth place among adults 18-49 in the 8:00/7:00c hour (a 1.6 rating) according to preliminary numbers, ahead of only "One Tree Hill" on the WB (a 1.2 rating).

From MTV News:

Diddy's planning to drop his next — and last — solo album September 19, he told MTV Europe, and to make it special, he's recruited a lot of help, including Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Brandy, Busta Rhymes, Nas and Will.I.Am. "I'm taking from what I've learned from dance music, electroclash, techno, hip-hop, soul, and pop, and kind of fusing it together," Diddy said, "It's like everything in hip-hop is so hardcore with guns and problems and beef, and nobody is being romantic — not in a corny way, but just giving all of yourself. It's still going to have that gangster vibe to it, but it's a musical journey. It's going to feel good." Diddy said the first single will be a club track. "We are going to bring a lot of high fashion, a lot of energy, a lot of sex, a lot of drugs, spirituality, good times," he explained. "We're going to have something for the kids, but it's really an adult thing. It's definitely pornographic, orgasmic, gangster, to the point where your soul feels good. It's like a spiritual revolution. It's like being sanctified." And if that sounds like an odd combo, Diddy sums it up as "Little Richard-style for the ladies."

Everyone from KeySpan to Sean "Diddy" Combs' record company have run up tens of millions of dollars in unpaid summonses for sanitation and street-digging violations because of "systemic problems" in the city's collection process. ...

Predictably, Verizon, Con Ed and KeySpan - which constantly have crews digging up city streets - all made the Top 10.

So did Diddy's Bad Boy Records and Universal Records, both of which were charged with plastering the city with illegal posters for new CDs.

04/13: Pitbull Rumor

Posted in Bad Boy Records

Another rumor from illseed:

I don’t know if you remember, but I told you that Sean “Diddy” Combs and Pitbull were supposed to be working together on Bad Boy Latino. The deal never happened. The thing is, we never determined why. I heard that Pitbull wanted to be part owner in the venture and Diddy wasn’t having all that. Unsubstantiated rumors say Pitbull claimed, "Diddy is just too cheap." I don’t know, but this seems to have some level of validity.

Of course, the key word is "rumor." Nonetheless, if it's true, it makes sense. Ownership is a serious thing and the decision to go into a venture like that with someone should always be taken very seriously. I know when people e-mail me about link exchanges (lame example, I know, but it all comes back to the same principle) and I turn them down, some of them go and say that I'm stingy, selfish, whatever. That's just how it goes.

Nonetheless, reports by Billboard that Diddy is on his album and that Pitbull is still working A&R for Bad Boy Latino would indicate that things are fine between them.

Posted by Patrick
Biggie was named #3 on MTV.com's The Greatest MCs of All Time. They haven't posted his page, yet, but he finished ahead of LL Cool J, Eminem, Ice Cube, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, Nas and Rakim. Looking at the pictures around the site, the people who have been mentioned and the people mentioned as honorable mentions, you can reasonably guess that Jay-Z and 2Pac round out the top 2 in whatever order. That's a little surprising considering that when they first came out with their Top 10 Hip Hop Albums of All Time, Biggie had 2 and 2Pac had none, so they went back and let 2Pac have 1 and took one of Biggie's off. But, I guess greatest albums doesn't equal greatest MC...

When I was viewing it from Bloglines, the piece was said to include this quote:

The set features appearances from Sean "Diddy" Combs, Lil Wayne, Bun B, Tego Calderon and TI, as well as production from Pharrell, Lil Jon and Mr. ColliPark...

But, when I visited, that part was not there. So, I did a little Googling and it appears that he has contributed to the album.

The rap star reportedly demanded a private trailer and two bottles of Cristal champagne just so he could watch proceedings on his new signing Cheri Dennis' upcoming video.

TeenMusic.com is the only site reporting this, so I'm not sure what that might mean, but nonetheless. It says the production company was on a budget of $100,000 and with Diddy not being in the video (according to the source), they didn't want to pay it. Who knows.

I really don’t know who, but which of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ artists had started freebasing heavily until she was forced to check into rehab? She’s also reportedly been married and divorced at least once.

Hard to say what this means. Is it recent?

The only female artists that we know of being Babs, Cassie, Cheri Dennis, Jordan McCoy, Thelma Guyton and the Making the Band 3 girls, I think. Recent or not, you can rule out Cassie and Jordan McCoy, I'm fairly certain. :) Anyway, it's just a rumor.

Video at Google Video.

This clip, put out by Kain, CCF, etc., features some footage that I wanted to highlight. At 1:11, you will find a performance of "This is Me (Remix)" by Dream featuring Kain. It's just Kain's verse, mostly.

At 7:15, you will find footage from a Diddy appearance on Rap Basement to promote The Saga Continues... Mark Curry, Loon, G. Dep and Kain are on there with Tigger and it features a freestyle session, but Diddy, Tigger and Kain are the only ones on their as this is a Kain highlight reel of sorts, of course.

I really liked Kain. "And We," "American Dream," "Let's Get It (Remix)" and "This is Me (Remix)" all stand out to me. I was disappointed when he left as I really thought Kain + Diddy would have been a great combination. I believe I read on Kain's forum that Diddy was ready to move forward with his project, ready to do a video, but then Kain, et all decided against it. If that's the case, it kind of rubs you the wrong way and makes it seem like he might have used Puff to get some exposure and then left. But, who knows.

Do not sleep on Big Gee, trust me. Big Gee is the new Scarface. He’s a new Down South bully. His album Live from the 13th Floor gonna come out after Boyz N Da Hood, so fourth quarter or first quarter [2007] on Block Entertainment/Bad Boy. He talks about how he formed the original Boyz N Da Hood lineup (the first lineup was T.I., Trick Daddy, Sean Paul from the Youngbloodz and Jody Breeze) and how he came to sign with Diddy. He mentions that Rick Ross is in the group and that Lil' Wayne is still a part of it ("Wayne’s on 15 records already, the album’s done. But I’m getting calls—Paul Wall wanna be a part of it, Slim Thug wanna be a part of it, I talked to Beanie Sigel about it.").

With Bad Boy’s lack of sales lately, it seems like Puff needs you for Bad Boy South more than you need him.

MixtapeTalk.com has an interview with Loon.

Mixtapetalk.com: Looking back, do you think you made the right decision leaving Bad Boy?

Loon: Oh yeah, definitely. I mean, Bad Boy is a machine that will give an artist visibility, but the way artists structure their deals now, to benefit them financially, is a deal you'll never be able to establish over at Bad Boy. So, it's definitely a great thing for me to be a free agent, and test the waters, to see what's going to work best for me. ...

Mixtapetalk.com: So, if you were putting out a mixtape today, who would you want?

Loon: Honestly, I will want them all, because I been out the mixtape loop. There are so many new relationships I need to establish. There might be a few djs out there, that's actually yearning for new Loon material, who knows. But, I've just been trying to accumulate a lot of material to flood the summer, before I start dropping out these singles. I'm back out here on the grind, getting it how I get it. I'm not really trying to waste no time. I have the chance to let my presence be felt, and this time, bring my following with me. A lot of my accomplishments, and things I was doing at the time, got overshadowed by Puff presence and all the things he was doing, at the time.

Mixtapetalk.com: Do you still keep in contact with Diddy?

Loon: Yeah, I speak to him. I'm in the process of writing some material for his new album. It's never a problem. Even though, the business didn't go the way I wanted, I was still able to travel the world, see some beautiful places, meet some beautiful women, establish international claim, all that through Diddy. I can never deny that.

I don't really buy the stuff about the deals because if it were true, Bad Boy wouldn't have any artists. Artists sign the best deals for them at the time the deal is signed. Bad Boy is offering these artists the best deal they have and they take it.

Anyway, with Loon, for the majority of people who know who he is, they know him or first heard of him because of Diddy. Some artists seem to forget who got them their initial burst of recognition once they get big and everyone knows who they are. But, who were the people who first made the general public aware of you and gave you that shot? What's the biggest thing Loon has done to date? I Need a Girl, specifically the part one remix, which reached number 2 on the Billboard 100. Why was that possible? Diddy/Bad Boy. It's good that he appears to know that (the swipe on deals aside) and hopefully he'll keep that in mind. They appear to still be cool, which is good, if he's writing for Diddy's upcoming album.

Don't get me wrong, though, I like Loon. I really liked his album (I have two copies of it, actually) and many of the tracks he's appeared on for other artists, Bad Boy and otherwise (like Stylin' remix, his verses on that Masari track, Let's Get It Remix, all of his appearances on The Saga Continues... and so on and so forth).

Updating what I wrote previously, Yung Joc's official website appears to have now completely launched (outside of the "sign up"/probable mailing list feature). It's also changed domain names. Instead of http://www.yungjoc.com, it is http://www.yungjoconline.com.

Why would they use that domain instead? Doesn't make sense, other than to say that it may be a business issue or a matter of convenience for Bad Boy as yungjoc.com appears to be registered to Block Entertainment/Stompin' Groundz (one or the other or both, it's kind of a mixed up whois statement) while yungjoconline.com is registered to Keisha Combs/Bad Boy. Bad Boy may, understandably, want control of the domain name (whether as a matter of business or a matter of convenience, as I said) and that may be the reason. But, just a guess, really.

Clinton Sparks has put some songs up for download on his homepage. We wouldn't link to song downloads normally, but Clinton Sparks produces for and is affiliated with major artists (he produced the Biggie/Marley song "Hold Ya Head"), so if it's up on his official site, it's probably alright.

More recently, he added his remix of Nasty Girl by The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Jagged Edge. But, he also has some older tracks on there, including Run This City (dirty, clean and instrumental) by Clinton Sparks featuring Diddy and Miri Ben-Ari (they also put a few words from Biggie in the chorus), Hold Ya Head (Clinton Sparks Remix) (clean and dirty) by The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Bob Marley and Vybz Kartel, Hold Ya Head (clean and dirty) by The Notorious B.I.G. featuring Bob Marley, Let's Get It On by Clinton Sparks featuring The Notorious B.I.G. and Busta Rhymes, Back Up by Clinton Sparks featuring The Notorious B.I.G., 50 Cent and Styles P and Same 45 by Beanie Sigel featuring Styles P and The Notorious B.I.G.

Every track mentioned is on my playlist except for the Nasty Girl remix, which I didn't really like for whatever reason. It's not bad, though. Run This City is a favorite of mine, however. It was on Sparks' Maybe You Been Brainwashed release, which I own. Great disc. Besides Run This City, it has a Madd Rapper skit, Knock Em Out featuring Black Rob and Diddy and I Like featuring The Notorious B.I.G. and XL. All tracks that are on my playlist, as well.

Enjoy.

Prefixblog.com has posted some videos from the March 28 meet and greet. This includes videos of Shawn Prez introducing Joc and Cheri Dennis, Yung Joc performing Goin' Down, Diddy saying a bit about Joc and Cheri Dennis and then Diddy saying a bit about Cheri (I'm guessing he's talking about her, when it opens), Aasim and Babs.

Diddy: "We ain't playin' that Aasim today. But, when it come, y'all gonna know what time it is."

As an April Fools joke, SOHH reported that Diddy "broke out" and sued Proactiv, as a result.

"Proactive promises a risk fee, money-back trial," says Diddy. "After all I've been through, I want my money back and more."
